Professional development is right at your fingertips with the Rotary Learning Center

Business and Rotary Leadership Skills are available online at Rotary.org

Professional development is right at your fingertips with the Rotary Learning Center, which offers members a range of interactive courses on navigating Rotary's online tools and developing leadership skills to prepare for new Rotary roles.

Anyone with a My Rotary account can take a free course in the Learning Center. Among the many courses available are How to Run a Webinar, How to Propose Legislation, Rotary Club Central Resources, and role-specific selections.

Get started by finding the Learning Center under the LEARNING & REFERENCE tab on Rotary.org. If you are already registered on the site, you will have a profile. If not, it's easy to create an account. From the MY PROFILE tab, you can modify your profile, find announcements about new and upcoming courses, and join a community to discuss what you're learning.

A great way to begin is by viewing the How to Navigate the Learning Center video tutorial, which covers what's available and how to make the most of it.

The center's catalog allows users to browse a list of subjects or see a complete rundown of all the courses offered. When registering for a course, you can either proceed to the material immediately or save it for later, returning to it from the MY COURSES tab.

Course material is provided in a variety of formats, including PDF and Word documents, interactive e-learning modules, and videos. Only some e-learning modules have audio, but all of them enable you to decide when to go on to the next screen.

A bar at the top of the screen marks your progress through each course. And a snapshot of all the courses you have registered for is available with the COURSE HISTORY tab, which also enables you to print a certificate once you have completed all requirements. Some district leaders require attendees at in-person training sessions to bring a printed certificate to ensure that they review relevant material before their session.

"This is a great way to use the center," says Adam Arents, Rotary's supervisor of learning technology. "It's better preparation than emailing a list of documents and saying, 'Please read these.' "

If your district sponsors fellowships or scholarships, you'll want to point recipients toward the Orientation for Scholars, Vocational Training Teams, and Peace Fellows course.

One of the most popular courses is Strengthen Rotary, which teaches members to incorporate Rotary values into everyday activities. The Rotary Club Central Resources course, another popular offering, helps members set goals and improve membership information.

For the first time, a required course has been added for representatives attending the 2016 Council on Legislation.

And a committee of British trainers, working on behalf of Rotary International in Great Britain & Ireland (RIBI), has developed a course covering RIBI policies and practices. The team is preparing other courses for a more global audience.

Rotary's Learning Center is "a powerful tool," says Arents. "Many Rotarians don't realize the extent of what is there and what's useful for them. We're working to change that."

Thanks to everyone for their concern and well wishes about Kate.  She was in and out of the hospital over the course of a week with an antibiotic resistant infection in her hand.  They finally got it under control and Kate is recovering quickly and has been back to work for a couple of days.

Glendale Sunrise Rotarian Installed as President of the Italian American Lawyers Association of Los Angeles

Glendale Sunrise Rotarian David DiJulio was installed as President of the Italian American Lawyers Association of Los Angeles by LA CountyJudge and presiding officer Maureen Duffy Lewis on January 31, 2015 at the California Club in downtown Los Angeles.

GSR President David Smith sent his congratulations to GSR Past President 1993-1994, David DiJulio.

The following are David DiJulio's condensed acceptance remarks.

I am honored and humbled to be your President. I am reminded of the adage: the second best day of my life was the day I bought my boat ---- the best was the day I sold it. This may be Immediate Past President Damian’s best day.

Discovering the REAL Italian Americans - our 2015 theme.

We all grew up with the Corelone family - the Godfather and Sonny. We were proud of the Godfather’s power and romanced by the rich family history. My father warned me to avoid the Mob but the Coppola drew me back in.

Remember when every Italian wedding was like Sonny Corelene’s? Is there anyone of us who didn’t think the Consigliore was the coolest one of all? He was on the inside, had power but like most attorneys - he never got his hands dirty.

The Godfather was cool and we picked up the lingo.

How is it we don’t see that the wise guys aren’t cool and they hurt us and all that we have worked so hard for. Is this why you grandfather and grandmother came to America?

I owe this awakening to, America’s favorite Italian Mother, Doris Roberts. She was at a dinner meeting at the CASA and said to me, it is a shame that Hollywood gives Italian such a poor image.

And the light bulb went off. Doris is here tonight, Please stand and let us give you a standing ovation for being a positive part of the Italian family.

We started talking and here we are. We are making the theme come alive be featuring promenate Italians who are making positive contributions to our country. We are leading off on FEB 11^th, with Ned Colletti GM and VP of your Los Angeles Dodgers. Then on April 15, 2015, we will have Janet Napolitano former homeland Secretary and current UC President. In June we have the Mike and Marianne Gatto. We have been working to get the Louis Zamberini story told at and dinner meeting. Of course we will have the every popular Macro Polo, Wine Tasting and Supreme Court nights.

This year will be year where we can all rally around a common cause and pull together. IALA can be the place to be, the meeting not to be missed. I know you can do it.

Of course, a President does not do anything alone. So I would like to recognize and thank; Tamera my wife and supporter Barbara Morse, my mother in law from Montana, Douglas my brother and his wife Sylvia. The DLG office: Ken Choi and Barbara, Dan Cantor. All those that worked tonight and finally, Bula Mae DiJulio who at 96 can’t be here tonight, but who 70 years ago this Tuesday, gave birth to your 2015 President. Thanks for a Great Birthday Party. You look great and make IALA look great, stand and give yourselves a round of applause. Thank you.
