Welcome to our newest member, Kim Villa.

Kris Hons stood in for Rick Dinger as President Tom Probst installed our newest member, Kim Villa. Kim has been with the Special Olympics for a number of years. We have been fortunate to have her speak to the club and share some of her Special Olympic superstars with us (most recently, John). We are very excited to have Kim in the club. She brings a wealth of experience and a passion for those individuals that she serves. We are looking forward to participating in the Special Olympics and helping her with these incredible human beings. Thank you Kim for choosing this club, and Rick for getting Kim to choose us.

One of our newer members Lindsay, was asked the same morning to be the club reporter. In bribing Lindsay to do so, I told her it was a great way to get to know names!  She did a fabulous job. Our program for Oct. 28 was our own member and Glendale unified School District Assistant Supt. Maria Ganderas. Maria is in charge of human resources, which means she wears 30 other hats not related to human resources, such as attendance!
When Dr. David Viar introduced her, we of course had to get past the multiple college degrees (was it 7 masters??). Maria took on the job of Coats for Kids this year and did a fabulous job. The best part of the show, watching her having to answer her phone to deal with a school emergency during the program.
Thank you Maria for being part of this club.

Though no one won the actual raffle money, monies were raised to continue to support the programs of this club. Thank you and blessings to all that serve!

Thank you Eric Hamilton for arranging today's informative Vocational Fair.
It seemed that everything had a theme (was this planned)?

We can purchase homes from Keith Sorem. We can get the financing from Ken (Bank of America).
Need help with taxes or audits, see David Smith (the only person who stayed and worked in his major in college).
Does your jacket need cleaning, Ray is the guy. Then there is Rick (Ricky to me). We learned the valuable difference between
Replacement Cost Value, and Replacement Value, not to mention being a member of AARP. Leonard can help you with commercial property management while Yvette is an ace at teaching artists the difference between numbers and colors by managing their taxes and books. And when all else fails, call Angelo. He fixes everything, can build anything, and survived the "closest" model for Peggy. And don't forget, at the end of the day, it's important to Brand yourself, your company and your message. Check with Stephen, he's the best.

In August, we gathered at the beautiful home of Eric and Trisha Hamilton to spruce up our boat (to Fire it up) for the upcoming Aug. 27 Rotary boat race. The event, held each year in the Redondo Beach Marina, features cardboard boats made by various rotary clubs. Two years ago, we won the race, despite complaints from other clubs (maybe because we blew them out of the water). This year, our own club president, Tom Propst, was joined by returning racer Sharon Townsend, as we tried to gain back our title. The event took place on August 27 at the Redondo Beach Marina. Tom and Sharon won first place in their first heat, and with only less than 10 min of down time, raced again and came in 2nd place!

Welcome New Member Lindsay Hornsby.
We are excited to welcome Lindsay into our club. She officially joined on Friday, September 2nd to a large crowd and is being sponsored by Stephen Ropfogel. Lindsay works at Express Pros and her boss, Kim Guard, was able to attend her induction. Welcome Lindsay!

Welcome Velvet Rhodes!

In August, we were honored to welcome Velvet Rhodes to our club. Velvet is a welcome addition to our club with her experience in Entertainment and Film Production. She has begun the Glendale Film Festival and has worked hard to bring an international film festival to our city. Welcome Velvet.

Thank You!

We want to thank Richard and his wife for opening up their beautiful
home and preparing a fabulous dinner for our
members over the Labor Day Weekend. Thank you Richard!

Thank you to those members that continue to support the Orphanage in Tijuana.
Especially to Frank and Ray, who were joined by Jory on their recent trip.

To our members who continue to make this a better place to be! Watch for new pictures each week.

Tired of pesky checks, stamps and envelopes?  Looking for an easier way to pay your Rotary dues? Did you know that you can now pay your Rotary bill by credit card?  You can talk to the club treasurer Alex Parajon to get the necessary form or you can find it on the club website in the members area under the "Organization" tab and then "Documents".

If you ever need to apply for a leave of absence from the club, you will find that form there as well.

From the RI Website:

RI President-elect K.R. Ravindran introduced a member benefits program at the 9 June closing session of the 2015 Rotary International Convention, saying that many more hands are needed to continue Rotary’s work around the world.

The program, , aims to boost membership and enhance member satisfaction. It will debut on 1 July.

“This innovative new program will allow Rotary members to connect with hundreds of businesses and service providers from around the world -- and that number is growing,” said Ravindran. “These establishments will offer Rotarians discounts and concessions on the everyday business that you do. And, in many cases, not only will you benefit, but our Foundation will as well, by receiving a contribution with each transaction.”

The program will include discounts on car rentals, hotels, dining, and entertainment. Discounts on more products and services from companies worldwide are expected to be added throughout the year.

“It will be another way to benefit from being a Rotarian and being part of the Rotary network,” said Ravindran, whose presidential theme for 2015-16 is Be a Gift to the World. “I urge all of you to become a part of that scheme.”

There are four major Personality Types in business, but in reality there are many more than that if you consider that no one is 100% of any one type.  If fact we are all a little of all four types.  it is important to know how to recognize each type and how to approache them.

You’ve heard it a thousand times: Happy customers translate into repeat business. For small businesses, truer words were never spoken. So why do some business owners view customer service as an unnecessary cost, believing in the adage that “a great product should speak for itself”?  Here are three things you can do to keep your customers for life.

HOW TO CHANGE YOUR LIFE STYLE AND REPROGRAM YOUR BAD HABITS

SET GOALS THAT WILL IMPROVE YOURSELF TAKE A NOTE BOOK AND WRITE DOWN ALL THE GOALS THAT YOU WANT TO ACHIEVE, BY THE TIME YOU REACH 100 YRS. OF AGE. (IF YOU HAVE NO GOALS, THEN YOU ARE DONE LIVING.)

FOR THE NEXT 2 DAYS, LOOK AT THE LIST AND MAYBE ADD OR SUBTRACT AS YOU THINK ABOUT GOALS. NEXT WEEK CHECK YOUR GOALS AGAIN AND MAKE A PLAN TO ACHIEVE THEM.

Then, relax and enjoy the present! Tomorrow is only in your brain.

FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE, YOU MUST  REVIEW YOUR GOALS AT LEAST ONCE A MONTH. IF YOU DO THIS, YOU WILL BE AMAZED HOW QUICKLY THE GOALS WILL BE REACHED.

ON A "POSTIT", WRITE THE MOST URGENT GOAL AND STICK IT ON THE TOP OF YOUR MIRROR. (THIS REINFORCING ACT MAKES IT HAPPEN SOONER). REMEMBER, GOALS ARE NOT WANTS OR NEEDS, BUT IMPROVEMENTS OF YOUR MIND. THIS EXERCISE (EVERY TIME YOU LOOK AT YOUR LIST) WILL REPROGRAM YOUR MIND WHILE WORKING 24/7 TO ACHIEVE YOUR GOALS. And, your mind's GPS will automatically make the right decisions.

GOALS MUST BE LEGAL, ETHICAL, AND MORAL TO BE ACHIEVABLE.

ALWAYS EXPECT THE BEST. Do not even think that you won't achieve your goals.

ALWAYS  TURN OFF YOUR CELL PHONE WHILE YOU ARE EATING AND RELAX AND ENJOY THE MOMENT. Always sit and be calm or meditate at least15 min. each day. NEVER GO ON A DIET. JUST CHANGE YOUR LIFE STYLE AND YOU WILL REACH YOUR GOAL. FOCUS ON THE GOAL AND NOT ON THE DETAILS. STAY HEALTHY. EAT A MEDITERRANEAN DIET, WORK, MAKE FRIENDS, AND STAY INVOLVED WITH PEOPLE AND EXERCISE. LISTEN AND LEARN FROM OTHERS. Your bad habits can be changed, one  at a time. After the first is changed, go to #2, and you will change your life.

GOALS: VISUALIZE IT. Get a new degree. Change your career, read the book you always wanted to. Learn something new like a language, game, or a new hobby. Get a new license to fly a plane, or drive a truck. Change your shape and lose some weight. Reach out of your comfort zone and JUST STOP BEING AFRAID.

YOUR NEGATIVE THOUGHTS ARE KEEPING YOU FROM REACHING YOUR GOALS. ELIMINATE THE WORDS TRY & HOPE, AS THEY STOP YOUR TOTAL COMMITMENT TO YOUR GOALS.

LIFE MOVES VERY FAST. IF YOU DON'T LOOK AROUND, YOU MIGHT MISS IT. REMEMBER THAT THE BEST IS YET TO COME. REPUTATION IS WHAT YOU THINK YOU ARE, CHARACTER IS WHAT YOU ARE.

Earlier this year under the guidance of then President Eric Hamilton and then International Chair Ian O'Dwyer, the GSR club donated $1000 to the Alabaster Mobile Clinic to supply a vaccine cooler and vaccines to be used in their health program in Kenya.  Below is a great note from the director of the clinic Shannon Fernando.  We look forward to having Shannon come to the club and tell us all about the success of the program.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi Mr. Hamilton and all at Glendale Sunrise Rotary club,

Hope this email finds you well! Myself and my team just returned from Kenya last night. The trip was a huge success and the vaccine cooler performed perfectly allowing us to vaccinate 500 children!

As you requested, I would like to come and present the results of our trip and show you pictures of the cooler in use, etc.

It would be best if I have about one month to collate all the pictures and prepare all the necessary stats. If possible, it would be great if I could be put on to speak on a Friday in October or after.

Please let me know if that would work. And thank you again for this incredible partnership!

Best,

Shannon Fernando

Rotary Code of Conduct

Faith, hope, charity & clean business.

Of these 4, the greatest is CLEAN business (Ray is the proud owner of a dry cleaners - Esteem Cleaners).

Charity sometimes destroys imagination & demoralizes character, clean business never does.
If business is clean, there will be much less need of charity, because clean business not only means a fair deal to the buyer, but also a living wage to the employee.

Rotary will continue to be charitable but it can do more than that, let it remove the cause of that which makes charity necessary.

Glendale Sunrise Rotarians, Don Icardo, Nina Sonin (GSR Youth Services Chair), Patty Fallahee and Eric Hamilton spent last Thursday at Horace Mann Elementary school passing out donated and collected books to Kindergarten, 1st, 2nd and 3rd graders. The head librarian kept the teachers and students moving through the auditorium like clockwork. Bookplates were placed in each book. Don Icardo made sure to tell each student, “we don’t write in books, do we, but these fine Rotarians will write your name in the book and it’s yours to keep forever”. Approximately 300 books were given away in a 3 hour period. Thank you to Marilyn Gunnell, Jory Potts, Richard Diradourian and Glynn Martin for helping sort and clean the books. Special thanks to Jory Potts for collecting the books. Plus Angelo Cirricione / Frank Lopez for transporting them to and from the Salvation Army / school. It really takes a village to make this project happen.

A couple of weeks back we had a great presentation by Arturo Valasquez of the Woodland Hills Rotary Club about the March 2014 District Humanitarian trip to Medellin, Columbia.  There are 8 projects for Rotarians to get involved with, all of which will greatly help the local people.  In addition, it promises to be an exciting opportunity to meet follow Rotarians from District 5280 and take a tour of the city and surrounding area.  More details are available on the District Humanitarian Trip website or you can call Arturo directly at 818-594-0081.

Fellow Rotarians, our website features the club banner, designed by our very own Frank Lopez of RnR Printing.  Always have a club banner with you, just in case you need to make up at another club.  Exchanging banners, like making up at another club, is a great way to meet new people and share the excitement of Rotary!

Just for everyone's information, this picture above is the artwork for a very large banner that Frank Lopez created for a fellow that has a small restaurant accross from Estado 29, the orphanage our club supports near Ensenada.  The owner was quite surprised and that banner made a huge hit when the club members presented the owner with the banner...sort of like Pollo Loco!
